Seven images from four different countries depicting three separate species were recognized in Nikon’s 2022 Photomicrography Competition.

Each year since 1975, Nikon’s Small World has celebrated images captured by light microscope. In their 2022 Photomicrography Competition, seven images representing the dynamism of the nervous system across three separate species received accolades.

Among their “Top 20,” Nikon awarded seventh place to Jianqun Gao and Glenda Halliday (University of Sydney, Australia) for capturing human neurons derived from neural stem cells using confocal fluorescence microscopy. In 17th place, Daniel Wehner and Julia Kolb (Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light, Germany) were recognized for their photograph of peripheral neurons in the tail fin of a zebrafish larva using confocal microscopy.

Three entries were honored as “Images of Distinction” by Nikon. These images included the developing nervous system of a zebrafish (Layra G. Cintrón-Rivera, Brown University, US), clustered iPSC derived neurons (Nikky Corthout and Jasper Timmerman, Flanders Institute of Biotechnology, Belgium), and the nerve network of zebrafish scales (Eric Peterman and Jeff Rasmussen, University of Washington, US). Finally, Andrea Tedeschi (The Ohio State University, US), was acknowledged for two of their images which depict the murine sensory-motor cortex following mild traumatic brain injury, and the vasculature network in an adult mouse spinal cord.
