The newest IASP-PRF Virtual Correspondents are excited to provide coverage of the IASP 2022 World Congress on Pain for our readers.

The IASP-PRF Virtual Correspondents Program is a unique scientific communication training program that provides early-career pain investigators with the knowledge, skills, and best practices needed to communicate science effectively to a wide range of pain researchers, patients, and the greater public.

This cycle of the IASP-PRF Virtual Correspondents Program will focus on the 2022 World Congress on Pain, taking place 19-23 September in Toronto, Canada. Our Correspondents will provide firsthand reporting, including interviews with experts in the pain field, lecture summaries, and coverage on social media.

Following a very competitive application cycle, IASP and PRF are happy to introduce their five newest Virtual Correspondents (see below). These Correspondents represent the depth and breadth of pain research – from dentistry to cone snail venom – as well as the global membership of IASP.

Please join us in welcoming the newest IASP-PRF Virtual Correspondents, and be sure to say hello on Twitter!

IASP-PRF Virtual Correspondents (5th Cycle):

Ozge Erdogan, DDS DMSc, graduated from dental school at Yeditepe University, Istanbul, Turkey, and completed her endodontic residency at Hacettepe University, Ankara, Turkey. During residency, she treated patients with toothache every day, and the experience motivated her to pursue dental and orofacial pain research. She recently completed her doctoral training and continues to be co-mentored by Jennifer Gibbs, DDS MAS PhD, and Isaac Chiu, PhD, at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Boston, US, as a research fellow. (@ozgeerdogan)

Jortan O. Tun, MS, is a PhD candidate at the University of Utah, US. He is mentored by Baldomero Olivera, PhD, and their research focuses on cone snail venom components and their potential biomedical applications. More specifically, they utilize cone snail venom peptides to probe ion channel structure and function in the nervous system to identify non-opioid targets for chronic pain management. (@JortanTun)

Paulina Scheuren, PhD,is a postdoctoral fellow at the Spinal Cord Injury Center, Balgrist University Hospital, University of Zurich, Switzerland. She achieved her PhD in health sciences and technology/neuroscience at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, ETH Zurich. Her research focuseson establishing sensitive objective readouts of somatosensory dysfunction related to the development of chronic pain by employing a multimodal phenotyping approach. This includes clinical and neurophysiological outcomes in spinal disorders and pain-related autonomic measures in experimental and clinical pain models. (@ScheurenPaulina)

Fernando Sousa, MRes,is a PhD candidate in the Department of Physiotherapy at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. He achieved his master’s degree in research in physical education at the Federal University of Sergipe, Brazil, and his research interests include the assessment and management of musculoskeletal pain conditions. His current research investigates the adherence and implementation of a telerehabilitation strategy for people with rotator cuff-related shoulder pain. (@fernandosouf)

Macarena Tejos-Bravo, MS,is a PhD candidate at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in Santiago, and is mentored by Margarita Calvo, PhD, and Jenny Fiedler, PhD. She investigates stress response mechanisms in the rodent brain and is currently analyzing the effect of stress exposure on chronic itch and pain in patients. When she’s not in the lab, you can most likely find her running or sharing a drink with friends. (@MacaTejosB)
