This symposium will explore the important aspects of experimental and preclinical pain research with an emphasis on discussing optimal methods for ‘Study Design’ and ‘Analysis’. Topics covered will be subject selection, randomization, blinding, statistical analysis, model choice, outcome measure selection and quality reporting. The ethical considerations in pre-clinical research will also be discussed.

Presentations will be short and discussion will be timetabled in and led by moderators. There will also be open discussion sessions. And during the lunch, a poster / discussion session from student-submitted abstracts will be organized.

Intended audience: It is envisioned that the delegates who would be attracted to attend this Satellite Symposium would be basic pain researchers, clinical pain researchers, and pain research students who have considered or are considering the use of non-rodent / non-human models, veterinarians in pain research and researchers in pharmaceutical companies who are using rodent and non-rodent models to evaluate drugs.

The day will be broadly split into two sections, a morning educational primer session and an afternoon session emphasizing recent findings in the field. The earlier educational session will consist of an introduction to Genetics in Pain Research, including current concepts, methods, clinical implications, basic science and industrial direction, and future research avenues. Questions will be taken from the audience for the education panel. The later session will focus on current results in the field of Genetics and Pain and will include presentations from leading researchers within our field. The goal for this session is to obtain an update on the field’s cutting- edge research. Following key note talks, a break out discussion will be held with all of the speakers where the audience can ask questions and comment on what was presented and on future directions. The intended audience includes basic scientists, industry researchers, clinical researchers, clinicians and healthcare workers who wish to be introduced to, brush up on, engage in current research and development, or understand potential applications to clinical practice of current topics related to Genetics and Pain.

WANTED: Physicians, Nurses, Occupational/Physical therapists, and Psychologists for study of new FREE information service 

NO PAIN+, NO GAIN!

 
We are conducting a study of a new FREE information service for evidence-based pain management.
 
Pain+ will make keeping up to date and applying the latest research in clinical practice easier for clinicians. To save you time, research articles will be pre-assessed for quality by research staff, and for clinical relevance and interest by practicing clinicians. A wide range of publications from multiple disciplines are surveyed.
 
As a “one-stop” access to current best evidence from research on pain management, Pain+ offers:
A searchable database of the best evidence from the health care literature
An email alerting system
Links to selected evidence-based resources
 
Pain+ was developed as part of a research study comparing two different types of access to pain research evidence.  Study participants will be randomly assigned to one of 2 ways of sharing research evidence: 1)  e-mail alerts and reviews about the best new pain research; or 2) access to web-based resources.  All participants get to try both services for 9 months each for FREE.

Eligibility criteria:
(1) physicians, nurses, occupational/physical therapists, psychologists who are currently seeing patients at least 1 day per week;
(2) are fluent in English,
(3) have access to a computer at home or at work which has unrestricted access to the World Wide Web, and
(4) have an active email account.
