A common criticism in the pain field is that preclinical studies of pain have not translated into effective new treatments for patients. One barrier to translation has been difficulty in measuring spontaneous, rather than evoked pain in experimental models. While emotional processing of pain is a key feature of the human experience of pain, work in animals has focused mainly on the sensory aspects of nociception.
